Ancient Syracuse ruled over a spur to the north of the modern-day city. With the exception of its magnificent theatre, the present-day remains of Neapolis make it difficult to imagine what the largest city of Sicily looked like in its heyday (5-4C BC) when it was home to some 300,000 inhabitants.
