Elie Wiesel Memorial House / Museum of Maramures Jewish Culture
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This poignant visit bears witness to Nazi barbarianism. Sited in the house where famous Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel was born, the museum displays devotional objects, documents and photos to evoke the memory of the Jews of Maramures. 90% of the community died in extermination camps and the survivors were "encouraged" to emigrate to Israel by the Communist regime. In 1992, only 48 Jews remained in the region.
