The Michelin Guide's review
Bali's highpoint (3,142m), Agung volcano, whose ascension is very difficult, is both the most feared and most worshipped volcano of the island. Created by the gods as their throne, the volcano symbolises the "navel of the Balinese world" and occupies a major place in the island's cosmogony and spiritual life. These slopes, damaged by eruptions (the last of which was in 2018), are the site of the most sacred Balinese temple, Pura Besakih.
