The Michelin Guide's review
Capital of Egypt under the Old Kingdom, Memphis, nicknamed Gate of the Nile due to its position on the Delta, was the city of the kings between the III and VI Dynasties. In its heyday, during the XIX Dynasty, Memphis was a cosmopolitan city. The ruler was then Rameses II, who had several colossi built here in his honour. The arrival of the Romans and the founding of Alexandria in 332 BC triggered its decline.
