The Michelin Guide's review
Peaking at 3 718m, El Teide is an impressive volcano and the highest point in the whole of Spain's territory. From the cable car station (3 555m), paths 11 and 12 lead through the uneven volcanic terrain to the Mirador de la Fortaleza and Mirador del Pico Viejo (1hr). At the summit (only accessible with a permit), there is a gaping sulphurous crater, almost 25m deep and 50m in diameter. On a clear day, the view stretches over almost the whole archipelago.
