The Michelin Guide's review
The Church of Our Saviour on Spilled Blood thrusts skyward its polychrome cabled onion domes on the very spot where Tsar Alexander II, to whom it is dedicated, was assassinated in 1881. Built in the Neo-Russian style and modelled after the Cathedral of Basil the Blessed in Moscow, it boasts a sparkling decor of mosaics, jasper and semi-precious stones covering nearly 7,000 m2. The courtyard is reached through a superb Art Nouveau gate designed by Alfred Parland, architect of the cathedral.
