The Michelin Guide's review
Two gigantic sphinxes wearing nemes (royal headdress) and false beards stand guard in front of the Academy of Fine Arts. They probably adorned the tomb of Pharaoh Amenhotep III in ancient Thebes, but were swallowed by the waters. Purchased in Egypt, they made the year-long voyage here, where they were installed in 1832.
