Since 1995, the museum is located in a striking contemporary building by Mario Botta; for the best and most extensive view, cross over the street and go up the steps in the garden. In 2016, the new SFMOMA opened its doors after a massive 10-story extension (Snohetta), making it the biggest modern and contemporary art museum in the United States with holdings of 33,000 works of art.
