The Michelin Guide's review
The "mother" of California's 21 missions was destroyed by a fire, lit by the Native American Indians, and rebuilt the year after by Padre Junípero Serra. All that remains is the Casa, an adobe-built structure, one of whose rooms provided accommodation for the priests. The church, adorned with a painted wooden ceiling and altarpiece, overlooks lush gardens, also home to a small whitewashed bell tower with 19C bells.
