San Andrés de Arroyo Monastery
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
Founded in the 12C, this large monastery, still inhabited by a community of nuns, stands isolated in peaceful countryside. The cloisters are a fine example of the simple, harmonious Cistercian style. In the northwest corner, look out for the elegant column adorned with a zig-zag motif dotted with flowers and crowned by an ornate capital. The chapter hall (13C), also worthy of the note, is home to the tomb of the founding abbess. Save time to see the warehouse (16C) and the church.
