The Michelin Guide's review
The upper town is Salvador's historical centre. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, the area boasts steep cobbled streets lined by delightful churches, museums and some 800 colonial houses from the 17C and 18C, two-thirds of which have been renovated. To get to this district, take the Elevador Lacerda, which connects it with the lower town.
