The Michelin Guide's review
The Catedral Basílica was built by the Jesuits between 1657 and 1672. The façade is made of lioz, a very fine sandstone used as ballast in Portuguese vessels. The interior cleverly combines Baroque and rococo influences. Don't miss the ornate high altar. In the sacristy stand an imposing dresser made of jacaranda wood, incrusted with bone, ivory and tortoise shell, as well as 18C copper paintings.
