Salvador Museu de Arte Sacra
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
Housed in the former convent of Santa Teresa de Ávila (17C), the Museu de Arte Sacra has a substantial collection of 17C and 18C works. All the main names of Bahian colonial art feature: Frei Agostinho da Piedade, José Joaquim da Rocha, and his disciple Teófilo de Jesus. Showpieces include the silver-plated statue of N. D. des Merveilles (16C), brought back from Portugal in 1552 by the first bishop of Brazil, D. Pero Sardinha, and an Adoration of the Shepherds (late 17C) that decorated the tympanum of a chapel in Sé, a masterpiece of talha dorada art.
