The Michelin Guide's review
Built at the behest of Robert Guiscard, the cathedral houses the body of St Matthew and was consecrated by Pope Gregory VII in 1085. It is in the Norman style and was seriously damaged by the earthquake in 1980. The bronze doors (from Constantinople) of the central doorway, the square atrium in multicoloured stone, the two richly decorated ambos together with the paschal candelabrum and the iconostasis make an exceptional ensemble that should not be missed!
