The Michelin Guide's review
Founded in 1882, this Benedictine monastery and seminary perch on a 300ft bluff, yielding heavenly views of the Willamette Valley and surrounding mountains. Visitors are welcome to explore most of the complex, including the high-ceilinged church; the monastery museum; the Russian museum, which contains artifacts related to old believers driven from the Soviet Union in the 17C; and the library, a striking piece of modern architecture designed by the highly esteemed Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and completed in 1970. A highlight in the library is the rare book collection.
