The Michelin Guide's review
Menéndez' chaplain celebrated the first mass of the parish here, thus establishing the Mission de Nombre de Dios, the first Catholic mission in the US. Although nothing remains today of the original premises, the gleaming cross, erected in 1965 to commemorate the founding of the city of St. Augustine, still looms above the salt marsh. Paths lead to an ivy-covered chapel housing the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche, originally erected here in 1613 by Spanish settlers.
