The Michelin Guide's review
Overlooking the beaches, these ruins used to be part of the palace and fortress of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews. Founded around 1200, the castle was greatly damaged during the wars of Independence, while the castle prison provided "accommodation" to numerous Reformist leaders. The Sea Tower has a particularly grisly late-14C dungeon known as the bottle dungeon, which is 7.3m deep and cut out of the rock.
