The Michelin Guide's review
Detroit Zoo was one of the first in the country to give its animals open, more natural environments. Loop trails and a miniature train wind through the 51ha grounds, which hold over 3 000 mammals, birds and reptiles. Habitats include the Arctic Ring of Life (polar bears) and the National Amphibian Conservation Center. An aviary houses the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery, with a butterfly garden and an aquarium.
