Sistine Chapel
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
A masterpiece of Renaissance art, the Sistine Chapel, originally designed as the chapel for the Papal Palace, draws tourists from all over the world. Its renown is due to its ceiling painted by Michelangelo from 1508 to 1512, which depicts biblical scenes from the Creation to the Great Flood, and the Last Judgement (1534) above the altar, again by Michelangelo. Lower down on the side walls are paintings by Perugino, Pinturicchio and Botticelli.
