The Michelin Guide's review
According to the legend, this small, inaccessible and sheltered hill was chosen by the Roman she-wolf as a safe place in which to raise her adopted sons Romulus and Remus. As a result of this myth, the Capitol hill was held sacred by the Romans right up to the fall of the Roman Empire. An important spiritual site in Antiquity, it became a centre of political power in the Middle Ages, after which it was gradually abandoned... until the year 1534, when Michelangelo transformed it into one of the most beautiful squares in the world.
