Forum Romanum: Temple of Saturn
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
The Temple of Saturn comprises a 1C BC platform and eight 4C columns (the temple having been rebuilt after a fire). Saturn was the god of agriculture and the weather; at the winter solstice, celebrations took place in his honour and in anticipation of the return of the sun. During such festivals, known as saturnalia, distinctions between masters and slaves were waived, and the latter were able briefly to taste freedom.
