The Michelin Guide's review
Occupied during the 13C and 14C, Aladža Troglodytic Monastery has retained niches hollowed into a limestone cliff over several storeys. The chapel of the deceased, the refectory and the monks' cells are on level 1, 10m above ground level. On level 2, the rock church, decorated with remarkable frescoes, commands a splendid view of the Black Sea. Don't miss the catacombs, a small museum devoted to monastic life or the terraces devoted, in summer, to cultural events.
