In recent years the downtown corridor (Downtown Richmond) has been revitalised with the addition of the 13ha of riverfront space. Nearby, a 19C canal turning basin is the focal point of the popular Shockoe Slip neighbourhood, an area of renovated tobacco warehouses and cobbled streets that is now one of the city's liveliest nightspots.
