The Michelin Guide's review
Since the building of imposing hotels and the laying out of two artificial sandy beaches, Calheta has been transformed into a seaside resort. The church, built in the 17C, stands a short distance from the sea and sports a beautiful Mudejar ceiling. With many vistas out to sea, the dark grey building, designed by Paulo David, houses the MUDAS Museu, which showcases a rich permanent collection of work by Portuguese artists from the 1960s to the present day.
