The Michelin Guide's review
Straight away, you are struck by the contrast of the black mass of a lava flow against the ochre, yellow and orange earth of the slopes of Leirhnjúkur in the background. With its fumaroles and mudpools, the place is magical, but the most beautiful is yet to come. From the top of Leirhnjúkur, the site of the 1975-1984 eruption, you can take in the immense lava flow, now cooled, which stretches northwards as far as the eye can see. On the way back, the path skirts an area of vegetation and a few patches of snow, adding the final touch to the scene.
