Visitors walk through half a mile of coastal forest, then ascend the highest unvegetated dunes in the whole recreation area. You can follow posts across the sand 2mi to the beach, but most people shed their shoes and frolic on the curvaceous dunes, laboring up and bounding down the soft, fine-grained flanks. Some people even bring snow sleds and slide down the steeper slopes. From the tops of the highest dunes you obtain a panoramic view of the dune system, the Coast Range and the ocean.
