Igreja N. S. do Rosário dos Homens Pretos
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
The Igreja N. S. do Rosário dos Homens Pretos, the church of the brotherhood of the "black men" (1630, rebuilt in 1777), built by slaves, presents a beautiful Rococo façade crowned with a scrolled gable, with just one tower. It was in front of the church that the ritual of the crowning of the Congo kings took place, the origin of the maracatu (traditional dancing procession). Inside are statues of black saints from the 18C (including St Balthazar and St Ephigenia), and a Virgin Mary in silver-plated polychrome wood.
