The Michelin Guide's review
The elegant Basílica N. S. do Carmo boasts a delightful Baroque façade. The interior, reworked in the 19C, has lost part of its colourful paintings, but retains a magnificent blue and gold altarpiece with a life-size statue of N.S. do Carmo, patron saint of the city. Jacaranda wood stalls blend in with this harmonious setting. Built in the 17C and 18C by the Carmelite Order, it was added to a former palace, converted into a convent in the 17C.
