Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
Set in landscaped gardens with an arboretum, this castle on a plain, with flowing lines, is a fine example of 15C military architecture. A French enclave in English territory, it played an important role during the Hundred Years War. The ditches, round towers with machicolations, the rounded curtains and its watchtower proved effective in seeing off assailants. In the 18C the castle found a new vocation as a holiday residence: bay windows open onto the courtyard and ancient trees grow in the grounds.
