To protect their oasis, in the 12C the people of Atacama built fortresses known as pukará on the hillsides. It was in the labyrinth of the Pukará de Quitor, now in ruins, that the native warriors in the 16C attempted (in vain) to stop the advance of the Spanish invaders.
