The Michelin Guide's review
On a hill sculpted into terraces, this is not only a valuable example of 8C-9C civil architecture, it also affords a stunning view of the Prambanan Plain and Merapi Volcano. It is unsure whether it was a city, the former capital of the Sanjaya, a monastery or a place of leisure. However, once past the Gapura, a double ceremonial entrance, you enter a huge plaza, strewn with stones and home to a crematorium. Beyond are interesting vestiges: a pendopo and pools.
