The Michelin Guide's review
This former penal settlement on the Tasman Peninsula was long considered to be one of the harshest of Australia. 12,500 convicts were incarcerated here from 1833 to 1877. Restored in the early 20C, it is today one of Tasmania's top tourist attractions. A walk along the hilly slopes of the 40ha/100-acre UNESCO site on a sunny day provides a sharp contrast to the grim, bewitching atmosphere that reigns at Port Arthur.
