Polovragi monastery, at the heart of the Oltet gorges, dates from 1470. Beyond the carved wooden doorway, the small white church in the centre of the courtyard is the work of Constantin Brâncoveanu, as are the murals, which depict, among others, portraits of the founders. Venture as far as the grotto, one of the 86 in the region, said to house the God of the Dacians, Zamolxis.
