The Michelin Guide's review
We recommend exploring the immense historic city of Polonnaruwa by bicycle. The city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the capital of the Sinhalese kingdom from the 11 to the 13C after the fall of Anuradhapura. In addition to architectural treasures, visitors can admire the lavish gardens created in the 12C by Parakrama the Great, by harnessing the water of the rivers and using the tiniest drop of rainwater. The gardens are ideal for a walk, although beware of pickpocketing monkeys!
