Built on the site of a former pagan Gallo-Roman temple, Notre-Dame occupies a large plaza next to the market. The eye is immediately drawn to its beautifully restored 12C façade. Characteristic of Romanesque Poitou architecture, although influenced by Saintonge art, it is rich in animated sculpted decorations; to be deciphered from left to right and bottom to top.
