The Michelin Guide's review
From the early 15C, the land to the east of the Hoe was the site of a fortress, which became a fort around 1590 to protect the Sound against marauding Spaniards. It was here that Charles II had the Royal Citadel built in 1671. There is a great view of the Sound, Barbican and the mouth of the River Tamar from the ramparts.
