Phimai National Museum
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This well-presented and enlightening national museum is devoted to the cultural heritage of the Isan, and contains a rich collection of exhibits from temples in the province. Don't miss the statue of Jayavarman VII, a remarkable portrait of the sovereign and a unique piece that underlines the importance of relations between Phimai and Cambodia in the 13C. Other masterpieces on display in the museum include magnificent items of gold and silverwork that highlight the prosperity of the Khmer Empire in the 11C and 12C. Take time also to admire the lintels and pediments adorned with reliefs - the latter in particular are quite exceptional.
