The Michelin Guide's review
Since its foundation in 996, Pannonhalma Abbey has majestically stood on a hilltop overlooking the plain. Its owes its creation to Géza, the first Magyar prince to be converted to Christianity. The abbey is still home to a few monks. The visit includes a tour of the cloisters, the church and its Porta Speciosa whose columns are carved out of red marble. The library boasts 300 000 works including the oldest manuscript in Hungary: the founding deeds of the abbey of Tihany (11C).
