The Michelin Guide's review
Built during the reign of Pakal (675), this harmoniously proportioned temple sits on top of a stepped pyramid of nine superimposed levels (representing the nine levels of the underworld) that reach a height of 20m. Topped by a vaulted roof crowned by a damaged ridge tile, the temple has five doors which give the structure a light airy feel. In the temple, three panels engraved with hieroglyphs recount the history of Palenque from 514 to 684 AD.
