The Michelin Guide's review
On a hill above the Gulf of Mirabella lie the ruins of Gournia, a Minoan city which dates from 1500-1450 BC and has been almost entirely excavated by American archaeologists. The Governor's Palace stood on the hilltop. To the north, a small sanctuary dedicated to the goddess of snakes, yielded a number of finds, now on display at the Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos.
