The Praça Tiradentes, where the head of the martyred independence fighter of the same name was displayed, is a must-see of any visit to Ouro Preto. Lining the large cobbled square are the former Mining School (Museu de Ciência et Técnica), the former town hall and prison (Museu de Inconfidência), and some fine colonial houses. In the centre, where Tiradentes' head was once flaunted, there now stands a statue of the hero.
