The Michelin Guide's review
An Inca Trail trek cannot be improvised (book several months ahead) and is also very demanding. You will spend four days climbing countless passes (up to 4 200m altitude) and stairways and crossing rivers. From KM 82 of the railway line linking Cuzco to Aguas Calientes, at the start of the Machu Picchu, you will go past peaks and valleys, admiring superb Incan remains on the way. The landscape is truly breathtaking, the countryside exuberant and the arrival magical.
