 Well worth the diversions
Historical and archaeological site
  The Michelin Guide's review
You arrive by boat on the Usumacinta River, passing stones covered with moss and overgrown with the roots of powerful ancient trees and listening to the cries of howler monkeys, imbuing Yaxchilán with a mysterious and infinitely romantic charm. A powerful Mayan centre in the classical era (around 400 AD), the site is distinguished by its beautiful and refined sculptures: steles, lintels decorating temple openings, in particular those on structure 12 (bring a torch ), and the magnificent openwork roof comb on structure 33.
