The Michelin Guide's review
Dedicated to Saint Junien of Poitou (5C), a friend of Queen Radegonde, this splendid fortified Romanesque complex nestling in a wooded vale, was founded in the 7C. It was entrusted to the protection of the counts of Poitou in the 12C, when it was remodelled. Look out for the lovely 17C woodwork and the shrine of Saint Junien (9C), a huge block of carved stone bearing rare Carolingian paintings in the abbey church. A few ruins of the abbey's buildings still remain.
