Niaux Cave
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This cave in the Vicdessos Valley is famous for its remarkably well-preserved prehistoric wall drawings. Due to the fragile nature of the setting, visits are conducted by torchlight and are limited to the Salon Noir area. The walls are decorated with outlines of bison, horses, deer, ibex and a stag seen in profile, expressing the world view of Western European hunting peoples in the late Paleolithic era (ca. 12,000 B.C.). The level of workmanship, refinement and realism testifies to exceptional technical skill in the art of drawing.
