The Michelin Guide's review
Lady Victoria Colliery, a coalmine from the late 19C, is partly open to the public. A permanent exhibition enables visitors to imagine life and work in a mine in the 1890s, while a guided tour takes visitors to the pit head and displays old machinery. Exhibits include a steam engine from 1894 with a 6m-diameter wheel that was used to raise and lower miners' cages and coal wagons, up and down a shaft some 500m deep.
