The Michelin Guide's review
Built by Richard Morris Hunt for millionaire William K. Vanderbilt, Marble House evokes both the Petit Trianon of Versailles and the Parthenon of Athens. Behind the heavy doorway lies a grandiose interior with Gobelins tapestries in the entrance hall, a richly decorated ballroom, a Gothic room with stained-glass windows, and a sumptuous dining room adorned with pink marble from Algeria. Don't miss the Chinese Teahouse at the rear of the property, which is open to the public.
