The Michelin Guide's review
Named for the rocky spit of land on which it sits, Rough Point was built in 1891 for Frederick W. Vanderbilt on a ten-acre oceanfront site. The Gothic-style manse was purchased in 1922 by James B. Duke, North Carolina tobacco magnate and founder of Duke Power. When Duke died in 1925, his only child, Doris, inherited the house and added to its collection of art and antiques. Today the 40,000sq ft "cottage" is a monument to Duke's discerning taste, left virtually unchanged since her death in 1993.
