Built on a wooded hilltop overlooking the Hudson, the Cloisters (part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art) re-creates a fortified monastery by incorporating four reconstructed medieval cloisters built with stones brought back one by one from Europe. Housed within is an unrivaled collection of medieval art including sculptures, tapestries and other objects spanning centuries.
