Jackson Square is named after Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), hero of the Battle of New Orleans and seventh president of the US. The monumental equestrian statue of Jackson was dedicated in 1856. Formerly the central point of the old town, the square, surrounded by the pointed steeples of St Louis Cathedral, the State government buildings and the Pontalba Buildings (1840), is nowadays a haunt of street artists and ambulant vendors.
